Weak Sustainable Fuel Rules Could Create Hidden Carbon Burdens, EDF Warns
mexicobusiness.newsEnvironmental Defense Fund researchers argue that sustainable alternative fuels only cut emissions if the entire supply chain does. Biofuels from recently cleared land, hydrogen made with natural gas and low capture rates, and e-fuels powered by fossil electricity can all carry a bigger carbon footprint than the petroleum they replace. EDF wants international bodies like ICAO and IMO to set common lifecycle accounting rules so weak standards do not create hidden carbon liabilities. The group also puts direct electrification from new renewables first, with alternative fuels reserved for aviation, shipping, heavy industry and other uses where electrification is not yet practical. For Mexico, the story ties into green hydrogen certification and cross-border grid integration. Leonardo Beltrán argues that transparent emissions tracking through regional systems like CertHiLAC could help Mexican clean energy exports reach European and Asian markets.
