Waymo's robotaxi fleet is growing fast, but expansion is concentrated in California and Texas
techcrunch.comWaymo now runs paid robotaxi service in 15 U.S. cities and is averaging 500,000 rides per week. But the fleet is not spread evenly. About 80% of its roughly 4,000 vehicles are registered in California and Texas, and Texas is where the recent growth is happening. The Texas fleet jumped 49% in three weeks, to 1,102 vehicles as of late September, according to state registrations and the Texas Autonomous Vehicle Fleet Tracker. A big part of that is the arrival of the Zeekr RT minivan, branded Ojai, which Waymo is importing from China and outfitting at its Arizona factory. The story matters for people watching electric transportation scale. The vehicles are electric, and the fleet is getting big enough to show up in charging demand and grid planning, especially in Texas. Tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles are also raising Waymo's costs, which is worth tracking as it pushes toward profitability.
