Waymo has partnered with B2U Storage Solutions to give retired EV batteries a second life as grid-scale energy storage systems. Instead of recycling them immediately, used batteries from Waymo's autonomous fleet will store excess solar and wind power, then release it when demand peaks. This helps balance the grid and makes renewable energy more reliable. The program supports the growing U.S. battery storage market, which is set to add 24 GW of capacity in 2026 alone. By reusing batteries that still hold significant charge, the partnership cuts waste and extends the economic value of each battery before final recycling. It is a practical example of the circular economy in the energy sector.
