Watford council carbon emissions fall 21.4% from 2019/20 baseline, with solar and home upgrades driving gains
watfordobserver.co.ukWatford Borough Council reports a 21.4% cut in its own carbon emissions against the 2019/20 baseline, while fuel and electricity emissions dropped 26.2%. Borough-wide emissions are down 23.5% since 2019, and emissions per person have fallen 27%. The council credits rooftop solar at Woodside Leisure Centre, cavity wall insulation and solar panels at the reopened Watford Colosseum, and wider efficiency work across its estate. A £3.75 million Warmer Homes grant program is funding solar panels, air-source heat pumps, and external wall insulation for residents, with upgrades expected to save about 7,000 kgCO2 per year and lift homes to at least an EPC C rating. That translates to roughly £663 a year in lower utility bills for a typical three-bedroom semi-detached house moving from EPC D to C. The council also notes challenges ahead, including water use, recycling rates, and the need for continued investment to reach net zero.
