Waste-to-Energy Plants Ranked Most Polluting Industrial Sector in India, CFA Report Says
deccanchronicle.comA new report from the Centre for Financial Accountability (CFA) says waste-to-energy incineration plants are the most polluting industrial sector in India, based on Central Pollution Control Board monitoring data. The report ranks WTE facilities above open-cast coal mining, copper smelters, and thermal power plants, with a cumulative Pollution Index of 100 out of 100. The report also highlights the Jawaharnagar dump yard in Hyderabad, where two WTE plants with 48 MW capacity operate. Satellite data from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Carbon Mapper shows the site releases about 5.9 tonnes of methane per hour, making it India's largest waste-related methane emitter and among the largest globally. The CFA says this undercuts claims that incineration resolves municipal solid waste problems, especially when wet organic waste makes up around 60 percent of the fuel. The report questions Telangana's proposed 4,000 tonnes per day WTE facility at Siddapur, which was reclassified under the CPCB's Blue category. That classification would skip mandatory public hearings and environmental impact assessments, and weaken oversight by the Telangana Pollution Control Board.
