Waste plastic bottles turned into battery graphite for electric vehicles, Penn State study shows
earth.comResearchers at Penn State University have developed a method to convert discarded PET plastic bottles into high-quality synthetic graphite for lithium-ion batteries. By adding a small amount of graphene oxide and heating the mix, they produced graphite that outperforms natural graphite in crystal structure, without using metal catalysts that leave impurities. The process yields both graphitic carbon for EV batteries and hard carbon for sodium-ion grid storage, turning a single waste stream into two useful materials. Conventional graphite production is energy-intensive and emits about five tons of CO2 per ton of material. This approach could lower both cost and environmental impact if scaled. The study is still at the lab stage, and large-scale production and battery testing remain. But the work suggests a path to reduce plastic waste while securing a critical mineral for clean energy technologies.
