Washington climate tech startups get $100K grants from Opalene Climate Challenge as AI boom pulls VC cash
geekwire.comA Washington state initiative called the Opalene Climate Challenge has awarded grants to six early-stage climate tech startups. The program was designed to fill a funding gap caused by investors pouring money into AI instead of sustainability hardware. Organizers skipped a planned state matching component and relied on philanthropic donors to get cash out quickly. Recipients include Airbuild, Ocean, ZILA BioWorks, Azotera, Climate Solutions International, and Emerald Battery Labs. The grants range from $25,000 to $100,000 and use a recoverable grant model, meaning successful companies return proceeds to donor-advised funds. Several winners are commercializing university research from the University of Washington and Washington State University. The startups work on microalgae fertilizer, bamboo building panels, plant-based resins, low-cost ammonia, climate infrastructure software, and sodium-ion batteries.
