A new study from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology reveals that rivers worldwide have become significant sources of greenhouse gases since 2002. Rising water temperatures and declining oxygen levels are driving microbes to release more carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. The research highlights a strong link between land use and river emissions, noting that agricultural runoff and urban wastewater create hotspots for gas buildup. The findings suggest that river restoration and better runoff management can serve as effective tools for climate mitigation.
