Natural Resources Wales is offering grants of up to £250,000 for peatland restoration projects. The Peatland Restoration Grant is open to private landowners, public bodies, and voluntary organisations. Funding can be used to develop and deliver restoration activities that boost carbon storage, biodiversity, and flood resilience. Applications are open until November 30, 2026. Peatlands cover only 4% of Wales but hold 30% of its land-based carbon. However, 90% of Welsh peatland is damaged and needs restoration. NRW will hold information webinars on October 6 for potential applicants. Enquiries can be sent to npap@cyfoethnaturiolcymru.gov.uk.

Peatlands are one of the most overlooked carbon stores. Wales putting real money behind restoration is a solid move. The 30% of land-based carbon stat is striking. Would like to see what kind of projects get funded and what the actual carbon impact per pound is.

Good to see funding for something other than trees. Peatlands do a lot: carbon, water, wildlife. The fact that 90% are damaged is a big deal. Hopefully the grant attracts a wide range of applicants.

Restoration is low tech but high impact. No grid upgrades needed, just the right hydrology and vegetation. I'm curious about the monitoring requirements to verify carbon benefits over time.

This grant is a decent policy lever. But the deadline is over a year away, which could mean a slow start. Also, 250k per project might be small for large scale rewetting. Need to see if it's enough to move the needle on 90% damaged.

I usually look at building efficiency, but peatlands are a different kind of carbon sink. The cost per tonne of CO2 avoided could be attractive if restoration is done right. Would like to see a comparison with other climate investments.
