Egni Co-op has secured a £1.4m loan from the Development Bank of Wales to install around 2 MW of rooftop solar on schools and public buildings across Wales. The projects are expected to generate 1.9 GWh of renewable electricity annually, with 65% consumed on-site by host buildings, cutting energy costs and carbon emissions. Over the lifetime of the installations, the co-op estimates a reduction of 4,500 tonnes of CO2. The funding comes from the Welsh Government-backed Local Energy Fund. Egni Co-op, managed by Awel Aman Tawe, already operates over 5 MWp of rooftop solar across more than 100 sites in Wales. Surplus revenue from the projects supports education programs and an energy data platform for schools. The investment also backs local contractors and supply chains, tying community ownership to measurable decarbonization and social value.

Nice to see a concrete number on on-site consumption. 65% self use is decent for rooftop solar on schools. Means less grid stress and more direct savings for the host buildings.

Yeah and 1.9 GWh per year from 2 MW is about a 950 kWh/kW capacity factor, which is roughly what you expect for UK solar. Not overstated. The 4,500 tonne CO2 reduction over lifetime is the real metric though.

Worth asking what the timeline is for commissioning. Article says construction and commissioning but no dates. Also curious if the 65% self use holds year round or dips in summer when schools are closed. Battery storage on site or just export?

The Local Energy Fund structure is interesting. Welsh Government backed but managed by a development bank. That model could scale if they keep the interest rate low enough for community groups. Egni already raised 5m via share offers so they have a track record.

Schools and public buildings are good hosts because you know the roof exists and the load is predictable. But the real win is if they pair solar with heat pumps or efficiency upgrades. Otherwise you are just offsetting grid electricity, not cutting total demand.
