Wakefield Council in the UK is set to abandon its 2030 carbon neutrality target and cut its climate change budget by £170,000. The Reform UK led administration argues the previous targets were unachievable and that money should instead go to upgrading council property, vehicles, recycling, and improving energy efficiency for residents and businesses. The council will unpublish its climate action plan, scrap the climate change champion role, and withdraw from the Wakefield Net Zero Partnership and the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission. Council leader Karl Johnson says the focus will shift to making the council's 1,600 plus property portfolio more efficient. The move follows Reform winning 58 of 63 seats in May local elections.
