Volvo Group launches Volvo Mining to push electric and autonomous equipment in mines
metaltechnews.comVolvo Group is creating a dedicated mining business called Volvo Mining, set to launch on January 1 under Volvo Construction Equipment. The unit will combine autonomous haulage, battery-electric articulated haulers, hydrogen fuel cell research, and Volvo's existing line of excavators, loaders, and trucks for mining customers. Per-Erik Lindström, currently senior vice president at Volvo Trucks International, will lead the new organization. Volvo says the move responds to mining demand for equipment that cuts emissions and improves safety. The first A30 Electric and A40 Electric articulated haulers, with payloads of 29 and 39 metric tons, entered production in April. Volvo Autonomous Solutions also reported its trucks have moved more than 3 million metric tons at European mining and quarrying sites. Volvo Mining will start with customers in Sweden, Norway, and Finland, then expand to other markets.
