Voestalpine invests 100 million euros in green steel as EU carbon costs split Europe's steelmakers
ad-hoc-news.deVoestalpine is putting an additional 100 million euros into its Donawitz site for a new electric arc furnace that will run on green electricity. The furnace is set to start up in 2027, initially producing 850,000 tonnes of low CO2 steel and scaling to 1.5 million tonnes by 2030. That would cut emissions by 90% from 2019 levels. The existing blast furnace is due to close in 2029. The company says the project secures more than 5,000 local jobs. The investment comes as Europe's steelmakers split over carbon pricing. Voestalpine, ArcelorMittal, and Thyssenkrupp want a freeze on EU ETS costs until green hydrogen and renewable power infrastructure is ready. Rivals like SSAB and Outokumpu argue for keeping the carbon market intact. The outcome of this policy fight will shape whether Voestalpine's green steel bet pays off, especially with the European auto sector in a downturn and China's demand soft.
