Voestalpine completes Donawitz electric arc furnace, targets 850,000 tons of carbon-reduced steel by 2027
ad-hoc-news.deVoestalpine finished installing the electric arc furnace at its Donawitz site, a key step in its greentec steel program. The furnace is expected to support partially electrified production in the first half of 2027 and is designed to make 850,000 tons of carbon-reduced steel per year. Cold commissioning has started, with first melts planned at Donawitz and Linz in the same period. The company is also pushing hydrogen-based steelmaking. It expanded the H2FUTURE pilot plant in Linz with Verbund, adding a six-megawatt connected load and a fifth hydrogen storage tank to feed the HY4SMELT demonstration plant from late 2027. These two tracks show how the steelmaker is trying to cut emissions on both electric and hydrogen routes. The stock traded about 1.4 percent higher on the news, but the industrial details matter more than the price move. Voestalpine reports results on November 11, which should give a clearer view of how the investment program is funded.
