Vodafone net zero operations: AI energy management, renewables, and Scope 3 targets

Vodafone Germany has become the first market in the operator's European business to reach net zero emissions from its own operations, driven by a 93% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2020. The company uses AI-powered energy management tools, next-generation radio equipment, battery storage pilots, and renewable-powered mobile sites to support traffic growth without increasing energy use. Vodafone matches 100% of its purchased grid electricity with renewable sources through PPAs and certificates, and aims to reach net zero operations across Europe by 2028 and Africa by 2035. The bigger challenge is Scope 3 emissions, which account for 96% of Vodafone's total carbon footprint. The company has set a Science Based Targets initiative-approved goal to reduce value chain emissions by 90% by 2040, and has onboarded 60% of its strategic suppliers onto a decarbonisation tracking platform. Vodafone is also expanding circular economy initiatives, including device recycling and network equipment recovery, and trialing distributed energy storage in the Czech Republic and UK to help balance grid supply and demand.
