Visibuilt raises 3.34 million euros for mycelium-based construction binders to cut carbon emissions

The binder is designed to replace carbon-intensive materials like cement and bitumen in paving and infrastructure projects. The round was co-led by EIFO and Unconventional Ventures, with participation from Proptechfonden and EMDFonden. The company plans to use the funds to move from lab-scale pilots to larger production trials with industry partners, including a concrete paver manufacturer and Copenhagen Municipality. Concrete and asphalt production are major sources of global CO2 emissions. Visibuilt's approach uses the root structure of fungi to create a binder that can displace fossil-based alternatives in paving applications. The company claims each tonne of its binder used in paving replaces a tonne of fossil binder and generates royalty revenue while reducing embedded carbon. The seed round will support larger scale testing, production design validation, and team expansion as the company works toward market introduction.
