Visayan Electric plants 1,000 mangrove seedlings in Mandaue for carbon sequestration and coastal protection
cebudailynews.inquirer.netVisayan Electric Company, in partnership with the Mandaue City local government and the Mandaue City Fisherfolk Federation, planted 1,000 mangrove seedlings along the coastal area of Barangay Jagobiao. The annual initiative aims to restore the mangrove ecosystem, which serves as a natural barrier against storm surges and helps filter debris during typhoons. Mangroves also play a key role in carbon sequestration, capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The project supports local fisherfolk by restoring breeding grounds for commercially caught fish, which sustains their livelihoods. The company targets a 70% survival rate for the seedlings, with the fisherfolk federation monitoring and reporting every three months. This effort is part of Visayan Electric's broader corporate social responsibility program focused on environment, education, and livelihood.
