Virginia tops AI data center readiness ranking, but water stress and grid carbon intensity complicate the picture
datacenters.economictimes.indiatimes.comVirginia ranks first in TRG DataCenters' August 2026 readiness assessment for US AI data center growth, scoring 100 out of 24 states reviewed. Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, and Texas follow. The ranking weighs infrastructure scale against grid carbon intensity and water availability, not just raw capacity. Virginia's mapped AI sites have lower estimated grid carbon intensity than Ohio's, even though Ohio maps more capacity. Water stress complicates Virginia's position. About a third of its mapped facilities sit in high water stress areas, compared with none in Ohio and 7 percent in Tennessee. South Carolina ranks sixth with a nuclear-heavy grid and no mapped facilities in high water stress zones. Texas has the most sites but 58.8 percent of them are in high water stress areas, which may push developers toward closed-loop cooling or recycled water. The report is a snapshot, not a full project assessment. It does not measure actual water consumption or account for interconnection queues, transmission upgrades, or fiber access. Those factors will determine whether the geographic spread actually happens.
