Virginia Leads AI Data Center Readiness Ranking, But Water Stress and Grid Carbon Matter
datacenterknowledge.comTRG DataCenters ranked US states for AI data center readiness, putting Virginia first with a score of 100. Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, and Texas followed. The ranking weighs more than raw capacity, including power supply, estimated carbon emissions from grid electricity, and water stress at facility locations. Virginia's advantage comes partly from lower carbon intensity. Its mapped AI sites are tied to roughly 2.3 million tons of CO2 per year, while Ohio and Tennessee sit near 4.5 million and 4.3 million tons. But about a third of Virginia's mapped facilities are in high water stress areas, and Texas has nearly 59 percent of its sites in those areas. Smaller states like South Carolina, New York, and Mississippi show that low-carbon power and available water can make a market competitive without a massive existing buildout.
