Virginia Beach $30M sewage gas project would turn wastewater biogas into energy for 5,000 homes
thecooldown.comVirginia Beach is weighing a $30 million project that would capture biogas from the city's wastewater treatment plant and turn it into pipeline-ready renewable natural gas. The Hampton Roads Sanitation District would work with Virginia Natural Gas to purify methane that is currently flared, then send it through a 200-foot pipe into existing utility lines. If approved, the facility could supply enough gas for about 5,000 homes per year. The project would be funded by Virginia Natural Gas customers, with an estimated average monthly bill increase of 36 cents. The utility plans to ask the State Corporation Commission for approval to recover the costs. It says revenue from the project's environmental attributes could eventually lead to bill credits, but those credits are only a forecast. A smaller version of the same approach has been running in Roanoke since 2023, supplying gas to roughly 500 homes.
