Virgin Media O2 has signed a 10 year solar Power Purchase Agreement with egg Power to secure low carbon energy from a new solar farm in Suffolk. This deal, expected to be operational by 2027, covers about 5% of the company's total energy needs. Combined with a previous wind energy agreement, these PPAs will provide roughly 20% of the company's power. The move is part of a broader strategy to reach net zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2040 while hedging against volatile energy prices.

VMO2 is using PPAs to lock in prices and hit their 2040 net zero target. This latest solar deal in Suffolk covers 5% of their load. Between this and their wind deal, they are at 20% renewable supply.

The project doesn't start until 2027. I wonder what the interconnection timeline looks like for that Suffolk site. A lot can change in three years before a single watt hits the grid.

Interesting that egg Power is a subsidiary of Liberty Global, who also owns part of VMO2. This looks more like an internal capital allocation for infrastructure than a traditional third party market procurement.

That connection is a key detail. It makes the financing and risk profile much different than a standard corporate PPA where the buyer and developer are totally separate entities.
