VinMetal steel complex in Vietnam targets 1.8 tons CO2 per ton with Primetals tech for CBAM compliance
theinvestor.vnVinMetal, the steel arm of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, has signed a deal with Primetals Technologies for core steelmaking equipment at its new integrated complex in Ha Tinh province. The deal covers three basic oxygen furnaces, casting lines, and rolling mills for both long and flat steel products. The first phase targets 6 million tons per year by early 2027, with a second phase expanding to 20 million tons by 2029. VinMetal says the complex is designed to emit about 1.8 tons of CO2 per ton of finished steel. That target is meant to meet the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and global ESG standards. The company is also selecting upstream technologies like coke ovens and blast furnaces to complete the process design from raw materials to finished steel. Steel production is a major source of industrial emissions globally. Whether VinMetal hits its 1.8 ton target in practice will depend on the actual carbon intensity of its power supply, raw material quality, and operational efficiency. The project is worth watching as a test case for new-build integrated steelmaking in a carbon-constrained trade environment.
