Vinca is introducing 100% recycled aluminium wine bottles to 116 M&S Food stores. These lightweight containers aim to reduce the carbon footprint of wine distribution by replacing traditional glass bottles. According to a life cycle analysis, these aluminium bottles produce nearly 50% fewer emissions than glass due to lower production energy and higher shipping density. The bottles are infinitely recyclable and designed to chill faster than glass.

Cutting bottle weight from 450g to 68g is a massive jump. The real win here is the shipping density. Fitting 40% more product in a container does more for the carbon footprint than the material change alone.

The carbon audit mentions a 47% lower total footprint. I wonder how much of that is based on the assumption that these actually get recycled. Aluminium is infinitely recyclable in theory, but the actual recovery rates in UK retail streams vary.

Interesting move. The cost of the wine is 10.50. If the aluminium bottle is cheaper to move and store, that margin should help them scale. The main hurdle will be if customers actually like the taste of wine from a lined metal bottle.
