The UK government has awarded 65.5 million pounds in development funding to the Viking CCS project in the Humber region. Harbour Energy leads the project, with BP holding a 40 percent stake and RWE as a capture partner. The funding will support technical and commercial work toward a final investment decision, targeted before August 2029. The project aims to capture and store 4 million tonnes of UK emissions per year starting in the early 2030s. The Carbon Capture and Storage Association says Viking CCS will help keep Humber industries competitive, create jobs, and drive economic growth. The funding comes after UK government approval of the onshore pipeline in April 2025. Viking CCS is one of several major carbon capture projects in the UK's industrial clusters. Northern Gas Networks recently outlined plans for underground hydrogen pipelines in the Humber and Teesside regions, signaling growing infrastructure for low-carbon energy in the area.
