Vietnam's forest carbon credits: from 780 million tons of stored carbon to real revenue
en.vneconomy.vnVietnam holds roughly 780.9 million tons of carbon in its forest biomass, mostly in natural forests. The country is now moving from treating this as a theoretical resource to building actual carbon credit transactions. The North Central Region ERPA already verified 16.2 million tons of CO2 emission reductions, transferred 11.3 million tons, and generated $56.5 million for forest owners. New decrees and circulars set rules for credit development, pricing, and benefit sharing. Credit quality is becoming the deciding factor. Prices vary by up to five times for the same project type based on baselines, additionality, MRV, and permanence. Buyers are interested but run due diligence before signing. Investors want clarity on land rights, revenue splits, and eligibility in domestic and international markets. Vietnam's forest carbon program is a concrete test of whether carbon finance can deliver value while protecting forests.
