Vietnam's First Carbon Exchange Trades 1,200 Tonnes on Opening Day at $5 per Tonne | carboncredit.io

Vietnam launched its first carbon trading exchange on the Hanoi Stock Exchange on June 30, 2026. On the first day, over 1,200 tonnes of CO2e allowances traded under the code VN2025. Prices peaked at 136,000 dong ($5.17) per tonne and settled at 130,000 dong ($4.95). The total transaction value was about $6,144. The pilot phase runs through 2028 with trading fees waived, and a full market is planned for 2029. The exchange allocates allowances to 92 companies from Vietnam's highest-emitting sectors: thermal power, steel, and cement. Over 511 million tonnes of CO2e have been allocated for 2025-2026. Companies that exceed their quota must buy allowances from others or use carbon credits to offset up to 30% of excess emissions. Major participants include steelmakers Hoa Phat and Formosa, Vietnam Electricity, and cement producer Vicem. Six securities companies are involved in the pilot.
