Vietnam launched its first domestic carbon trading exchange on June 29, 2026, marking a key step in the country's plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions and reach net-zero by 2050. The exchange operates under Decree 29/2026/ND-CP, which sets the legal framework for trading emission quotas and carbon credits. A pilot phase runs from late 2026 to 2028, with full market operations scheduled for 2029. The government has already allocated emission quotas to 110 industrial facilities through the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. A national registry system for tracking quotas and credits is now in place. The exchange gives businesses a market-based tool to meet sustainability goals while supporting Vietnam's international climate commitments. This launch follows earlier pilot quotas for key sectors in 2025 and 2026. The market is centrally managed, with rules designed to align with Vietnam's target of reducing emissions by 2030. The exchange is expected to drive green transition and low-carbon investment in the country.
