Vietnam has introduced Decree No. 180/2026/ND-CP to regulate forest carbon sequestration and storage services. The new rules establish a framework for carbon trading through direct contracts or a dedicated exchange, with payments based on tonnes of CO2 or carbon credits. Starting July 1, 2026, the regulations will prioritize using revenue from carbon credits to fund forest protection, community livelihoods, and the development of national forestry databases. The decree aims to balance the interests of the state and forest owners while adhering to international emission reduction commitments.
