Vietnam carbon exchange quiet after three months, awaits international capital and clearer rules
vietnam.vnVietnam launched its national carbon exchange in June 2026, but after three months trading volumes remain thin. An interview with ASEAN Carbon Credit Exchange deputy director Nguyen Vo Truong An explains why: the compliance market is still in pilot, with quotas and covered entities being phased in, and the voluntary market lacks a full legal framework for credit ownership, transfer, and registration. The article argues Vietnam has strong supply potential from forests, low-emission agriculture in the Mekong Delta, renewables, waste treatment, and biogas. Realistic growth depends on finalizing measurement, reporting, and verification standards, aligning with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and connecting the voluntary market to international buyers through the planned Ho Chi Minh City International Finance Centre. Demand today comes mainly from FDI firms and exporters in global supply chains.
