Victorian Energy Upgrades scheme fraud leaves households with lost deposits and void warranties
brisbanetimes.com.auVictoria's $572 million Energy Upgrades scheme is supposed to make efficient appliances cheaper, but a string of failed installers has left households with lost deposits and no warranty cover. The Essential Services Commission has suspended or cancelled nearly 20 businesses in two years. At least two companies, Cyanergy and Glower, went into liquidation owing customers millions for work that was never finished or was defective. Regulators are now chasing a newer problem: installers using AI-generated images to claim certificates worth $83 each. In one case, a business had to surrender $230,000 in credits after submitting staged photos. The same scheme will absorb all of Victoria's solar rebates next year, so how well it polices fraud will matter to a lot more households.
