Verra reinstates Northern Kenya Grassland Carbon Project after community consent review

Verra has reinstated the Northern Kenya Grassland Carbon Project (NKRCP), one of Africa's largest carbon credit initiatives, after a community-led review. The project spans 22 conservancies and 247 communities across nearly two million hectares. It was placed under review after a court ruling questioned land governance procedures for some conservancies. The reinstatement followed a process where the Chari Dedha Community reaffirmed participation through governance and consent procedures under Kenya's Community Land Act. An independent validator assessed the process, including consultations with community members and outside stakeholders, and confirmed it met Verra's requirements. The project will continue generating credits while legal proceedings around conservancy structures continue. The project aims to remove and store carbon in soils while supporting livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate resilience over a 40-year period. More than 300 community meetings were held during the review to strengthen consent and grievance processes.
