Verra has launched a public consultation on a major update to its cookstove carbon credit methodology, VM0050. The proposed version 2.0 aims to tighten emission quantification by integrating the MoFuSS-DS tool for non-renewable biomass, accounting for the Hawthorne effect in testing, and standardizing stove usage monitors. The consultation runs from July 9 to August 10, 2026, and Verra plans to submit the updated framework to the ICVCM to maintain its Core Carbon Principles approval. This overhaul comes after VM0050 v1.0 received ICVCM approval in March 2025. Key changes include removing the older CDM TOOL30 option, expanding scope to heat retention devices, and requiring both Stove Usage Monitors and Kitchen Performance Tests. Stakeholders can submit feedback via the Verra Project Hub. Verra is also seeking proposals for an independent expert review of the draft by July 31, 2026.

Dropping CDM TOOL30 for MoFuSS-DS on fNRB is a big deal. The old tool was widely criticized for inflating non-renewable biomass fractions. If the new tool lowers those numbers, a lot of existing cookstove projects could see their credit volumes drop. That will hit project economics hard.

Expanding scope to heat retention devices is smart. Those are cheap and durable compared to replacing stoves entirely. But the real test is whether the monitoring requirements become too expensive for small projects. SUMs plus KPTs add cost. Need to see if the premium on credits covers that.
