Verra has launched its new Scope 3 Standard (S3S) Program, opening a pathway for project developers to register climate projects tied to corporate value chains. The program, effective September 15, introduces Scope 3 Units (S3Us) designed to help companies report and claim reductions from supply chain activities. Initially, only two methodologies are available: improved agricultural land management and CO2 utilization in concrete production. Full registration and issuance features will roll out in later updates. The program aims to turn Scope 3 emissions, which often account for over 75% of a company's carbon footprint, into a structured market for investment. S3Us differ from traditional carbon credits because they require a verified connection to the specific goods or services a company uses. This reduces double counting and supports credible net-zero claims. Verra is also using a digital-first approach to lower verification costs and streamline project tracking, potentially making smaller projects more viable.
