Vema Hydrogen and SAF+ International Group have signed an MOU to produce synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Quebec. Vema will supply over 4,000 tons per year of low-carbon hydrogen from its Engineered Mineral Hydrogen (EMH) project starting around 2028. The hydrogen will feed SAF+IG's production plant co-located at Vema's facility, cutting transportation costs and supply chain risk. The fuel will use captured CO2 and modular reactor tech from French company KHIMOD, marking its first North American deployment. The partners claim the synthetic SAF can reduce carbon footprint by 90% compared to conventional jet fuel. Aviation accounts for roughly 2-2.5% of global emissions, and SAF remains expensive and scarce. This project aims to demonstrate a replicable model for producing synthetic SAF at scale using a non-electrolytic hydrogen source. Quebec's existing infrastructure and policy support make it a logical testbed. The partnership targets first hydrogen deliveries in 2028, with the integrated EMH-to-SAF ecosystem designed for replication in other markets. If successful, it could offer a more cost-effective pathway for airlines facing tightening decarbonization mandates.
