Vema Hydrogen and SAF+ International Group signed an MOU to build Canada's first integrated mineral hydrogen to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) hub in Quebec. Vema will supply over 4,000 tons of low-carbon hydrogen per year from its engineered mineral hydrogen extraction project starting around 2028. SAF+ will co-locate its e-fuel production facility at the hydrogen site to avoid pipeline transport and supply chain risks. The project uses KHIMOD's modular reactor technology to convert the hydrogen and captured CO2 into drop-in synthetic jet fuel. This is KHIMOD's first commercial installation in North America. The partnership aims to bypass the high capital costs and volume constraints that currently limit SAF adoption. If it delivers on its timeline, this could be a real test of whether mineral hydrogen can compete with electrolytic routes for aviation fuel production.

This is the kind of project that could actually move the needle on SAF volume if the mineral hydrogen cost is lower than electrolytic. 4,000 tons of hydrogen per year is modest. For context, a single large electrolyzer plant can do that. The differentiator here is the mineral source and the co-location. If the cost really is lower than electrolytic, this could scale. But we need to see the actual carbon footprint of the extraction process.

KHIMOD's modular reactor tech being deployed in North America for the first time is notable. Modularity helps with scaling but the real test is whether the kerosene selectivity is high enough to make the economics work at commercial scale. Hope they publish some performance data.
