Vedanta Iron and Steel Ltd (VISL) has cut 2.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions over five years. The company achieved this through a mix of waste heat recovery systems, shifting logistics from trucks to barges, and deploying electric vehicles in its mining operations. Additional reductions come from ecological restoration and afforestation projects in Goa and Jharkhand. The company is also transitioning its Bokaro steel plant to piped natural gas to further lower its industrial carbon footprint.

Vedanta claims 2.5 MT reduction, but a huge chunk of that is from waste heat recovery and planting trees. I want to see the actual baseline data for their steel production emissions to see if this is a real drop in intensity or just a side project.

The 100 MW waste heat recovery is the only part here that actually moves the needle on industrial power. My question is: how much of this is new capacity versus just optimizing old systems? Those numbers look a bit too round.

Switching to piped natural gas at Bokaro is a start, but it is still a fossil fuel. The real cost and technical hurdle will be moving toward green hydrogen or electric arc furnaces if they actually want to hit net zero.

Mixing sequestration from trees with operational emission cuts in one total is a classic reporting trick. One is a permanent process change, the other is a land use offset. They should be reported separately to understand the actual decarbonization rate.
