Vedanta Iron and Steel Ltd (VISL) has reduced or sequestered 2.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions over five years. The company achieved this through waste heat recovery systems, replacing diesel trucks with barge logistics, and transitioning to electric vehicles for site operations. Additional reductions come from ecological restoration and reforestation projects in Goa and Jharkhand. The company is also shifting its Bokaro steel plant to piped natural gas to further lower its industrial carbon footprint.

Vedanta claims 2.5 mt of carbon cuts. Most of that seems to come from waste heat recovery and some forestry. It is a start for heavy industry, but the actual percentage of total plant emissions is what matters here.

The 100 MW waste heat recovery is the real win here. It is basically free energy once the CAPEX is paid. I wonder what the actual efficiency gain is compared to their previous baseline.

Switching to piped natural gas at Bokaro is a low hanging fruit. The real challenge is how they handle the primary smelting process. Until they move away from coke, the needle barely moves.
