Vedanta Iron and Steel cuts 2.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions in 5 years through renewable energy, electrification, and reforestation
millenniumpost.inVedanta Iron and Steel Ltd (VISL) reported it has reduced, avoided, or sequestered nearly 2.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions over five years. The company deployed electric vehicles, wheel loaders, and forklifts that save 800 kilolitres of diesel annually. Its barge logistics eliminated roughly 210,000 truck trips in FY26, saving 10.8 million litres of diesel and cutting nearly 28,900 tonnes of CO2. VISL generates 100 MW of power from waste heat recovery at its pig iron plant in Goa and steel plant in Bokaro, avoiding about 2.4 million tonnes of CO2. The company also restored the Sanquelim mine in Goa, where 750,000 trees on 100 hectares sequester around 16,000 tonnes of CO2 each year. At the Bokaro plant, a switch to piped natural gas with Indian Oil is expected to cut emissions by roughly 1,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually.
