Vedanta Group reported a 15% reduction in metals emissions intensity from FY21 to FY26, dropping from 6.45 to 5.44 tCO2e per tonne of metal. The company boosted renewable energy consumption by over 50% year on year to nearly 4 billion units in FY26, avoiding about 3 million tonnes of CO2. It also used 365 kilotonnes of biomass as alternative fuel, with Talwandi Sabo Power Plant blending biomass at over 5% of its fuel mix. Vedanta planted nearly 10 lakh trees in FY26 as part of a goal to reach 70 lakh trees by 2030 under the World Economic Forum's 1 Trillion Trees initiative. Subsidiaries like Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta Aluminium earned top sustainability rankings from S&P Global. The company's four-pronged strategy covers emissions mitigation, cleaner fuel switching, renewable energy expansion, and offsetting through afforestation and water stewardship.

Vedanta cut metals emissions intensity 15% since FY21. They pushed renewables up 50% YoY to nearly 4 billion units. Biomass at Talwandi Sabo is over 5% of fuel mix now. That is actual industrial decarbonization, not just offsets.

The 3 million tonnes CO2 avoided from renewables is solid. But the biomass number is small relative to total emissions. 365 kt biomass vs their overall footprint. Still, it is a start for coal plant co-firing.

Biomass co-firing at 5% is low but it proves the plant can handle it. Scaling to 10 or 15% would need supply chain work. Biomass sourcing at scale is the real bottleneck for most Indian thermal plants.

454 MW round the clock renewable capacity is interesting. That means they paired solar or wind with storage. Would like to know the actual storage configuration and cost. That is the hard part for industrial users.

The 15% intensity drop is over 5 years. That is about 3% per year. Not fast enough for 1.5C pathways but it is real progress for a heavy industry player. The tree planting target of 70 lakh by 2030 is modest but measurable.
