Vedanta Group reports a 15% reduction in metals emissions intensity since FY21, dropping from 6.45 to 5.44 tCO2e per tonne of metal produced. The company increased renewable energy use by 50% year on year to nearly 400 crore units, avoiding 30 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions. It also deployed 365 kilotonnes of biomass fuel, cutting an additional 5 to 6 lakh tonnes of emissions. Vedanta's low-carbon strategy includes operational efficiency, cleaner fuels, renewable energy, and carbon offsetting through afforestation. The company has planted nearly 40 lakh trees since FY21 and aims for 70 lakh by 2030. Hindustan Zinc became India's first ICMM member, and Vedanta Oil & Gas achieved the OGMP 2.0 Gold Standard Pathway. Vedanta Aluminium expanded low-carbon products with Restora at BALCO.

15% drop in emissions intensity since FY21 is decent for a metals major. The jump in renewables use to 400 crore units is the real story here. Would like to see the breakdown of what share of total power that represents.

Good point. 400 crore units is about 4 TWh. For a company running smelters and refineries, that could be 10-15% of their total load. Need to check if that's captive RE or grid purchases with RECs.

The biomass piece is interesting. 365 kt of biomass replacing coal in boilers cuts 5-6 lakh tonnes CO2. That's a direct substitution play, not offsets. More industrial users should look at this.

Biomass at scale works if supply chains are local and consistent. Vedanta has mines and captive power, so they can probably secure feedstock. Still, 365 kt is a lot of ag residue logistics.
