Vancouver city council has voted to pause emissions tracking for large buildings and lift the ban on natural gas heating for new homes. Mayor Ken Sim argues these changes reduce bureaucracy and lower housing costs by giving developers more heating options.

This is a classic example of policy decoupling. The city is pausing emissions reporting just as the province is reviewing its own goals. Removing the reporting requirement makes it impossible to verify if new builds are actually hitting any targets.
The affordability argument is weak. Heat pumps are often cost competitive with gas in new builds. The real saving here is for the developer who does not have to update their standard plans or train crews on new tech.
If they keep installing gas, they are just locking in carbon for the next 20 years. Does the city have a plan for the grid capacity if they eventually force a retrofit, or are they just kicking the can down the road?
Wild to see a city backtrack on gas bans while the rest of the region pushes for electrification. The reporting pause is the real blow here. No data means no accountability.
