Vancouver cruise season sets record as Canada Place shore power expansion targets 3,300 tonnes of CO2 cuts
vancouver.citynews.caThe Port of Vancouver reported a record 2026 cruise season, with about 1.4 million passengers and 358 ship visits, up roughly 18 to 19 percent from 2025. Passenger spending before and after cruises averaged $1,144 per traveler, and the port estimates each docking brings about $3 million into the local economy. Next year, shore power capacity at Canada Place is set to expand, letting more cruise ships plug into British Columbia's low-carbon electricity grid instead of running diesel generators while docked. The port says this should prevent around 3,300 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per season, roughly equal to taking 770 gas-powered cars off the road annually.
