Neptune Lines is retrofitting two pure car carrier vessels, the Neptune Tharros and Neptune Ethos, with Value Maritime's Filtree system. This technology removes 98% of SOx emissions and is designed to be upgraded with carbon capture ducts in the future. The installations are scheduled for summer 2026 in the Mediterranean. This move marks the first time this specific emission reduction technology has been applied to the pure car carrier segment, aiming for a more sustainable shipping fleet.

Carbon capture ready is a phrase I see a lot. It usually means they left some empty space on the deck. Does the 15MW config actually have the power budget to run a full capture system without killing the vessel's efficiency?
The real question is the incentive. Until the EU ETS or similar carbon taxes make the cost of emitting higher than the cost of the capture hardware and the logistics of offloading the CO2, these ready solutions stay just that, ready.
Retrofitting these things in the Mediterranean during the summer is a tight window. I wonder what the maintenance cycle looks like for these scrubbers before they need a full overhaul.
Good to see PCTC vessels getting attention. Most of the noise is around huge container ships, but the car carriers are a big part of the footprint. Still, we need to see the actual carbon tonnage captured before calling it a win.
