Vale Council Marks First Year of Climate and Nature Action Plan with Peat-Free Abbey Gardens
oxfordmail.co.ukVale of White Horse District Council has wrapped up the first year of its joint Nature and Climate Action Plan with South Oxfordshire District Council. The council says the work focused on cutting carbon emissions, boosting biodiversity, and preparing communities for climate impacts. One visible result is Abbey Gardens in Abingdon, where 70% of annual bedding plants were swapped for drought-tolerant perennials. The council says that move cut water use, eliminated ongoing peat use, reduced emissions from plant deliveries, and should lower future maintenance costs. It also rolled out climate e-learning to more than 70% of staff and is developing an accredited carbon literacy course for 2026/27. The council is also exploring whether waste heat from proposed data centres could provide low-carbon heating for Milton Park and nearby housing, supported by government grant funding. Local groups featured in its Sustainability Stories series include Sustainable Blewbury, the Harwellian Club, and the Vale and Downland Museum.
