University of the West of Scotland researchers are part of a new 1.3 million pound project called ReSurface that aims to find better ways to recycle artificial sports pitches. The three year project will look at recovering materials like infill, backing layers, and plastics from old turf, and figure out how to build a recycling network across the UK. Currently millions of square metres of synthetic turf are removed each year but most ends up in landfill or gets shipped long distances to specialist recyclers, which adds cost and emissions. The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Defra, and led by Loughborough University alongside UWS. Researchers will compare different recycling infrastructure models such as regional hubs versus centralised facilities to see what works best economically and environmentally. The goal is to create a circular system that cuts waste and lowers carbon emissions from the sports sector.

The transport issue is real. Most UK recycling facilities for this stuff are in the Midlands or North West. A pitch in Scotland or Cornwall has a big carbon penalty before recycling even starts. Regional hubs make sense.

EPR for pitches would be a big shift. Right now the cost of disposal falls on local clubs and councils. If manufacturers had to fund recycling, it would change the economics of which materials get used in new turf.
