The Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology is expanding its facilities to certify compostable products. As one of only eight labs in the U.S. capable of BPI certification, the center uses respirometers to measure carbon dioxide release, ensuring materials fully biodegrade without leaving harmful residues. The lab tests for disintegration, plant toxicity, and biodegradation. It is currently moving toward certifying home compostability in addition to industrial standards, helping companies develop packaging that breaks down in varied environments while screening for PFAS and heavy metals.
