Uttarakhand starts geothermal exploration at Tapovan with Iceland consultant for 1 MW pilot plant

Uttarakhand has begun scientific exploration for the Tapovan Geothermal Project in Chamoli district, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the state. The state-run UJVN Ltd has hired Iceland-based Verkis Consulting Engineers to prepare an initial project report that will guide drilling and geological studies. The project follows a 2025 state geothermal policy and aims to build a 1 MW pilot plant that could later scale to 10 MW. Officials say the project draws on Iceland's experience using geothermal for power and heating while cutting fossil fuel use and carbon emissions. The pilot phase will test whether the resource can support commercial development in the Himalayan region. If successful, the project could provide a new clean energy source for hill districts that currently rely on hydropower and grid imports. The state government is positioning this as a step toward energy self-reliance and lower emissions. Local employment and investment are also cited as expected benefits. The technical committee will oversee implementation to international standards.
