Using Mining Slag for Carbon Capture and Sequestration
technologynetworks.comResearchers from Concordia University have found that iron-rich slag, a common waste product from metal processing, can effectively capture and store carbon dioxide. Unlike previous methods that relied heavily on water, this study demonstrates that CO2 can be stored through adsorption on the slag surface under more realistic, low-moisture conditions. This discovery suggests that mining operations could turn waste piles into passive carbon sinks. By injecting captured CO2 from nearby industrial plants directly into on-site slag deposits, companies could reduce their emissions footprint with minimal additional processing.
