Researchers at Stockholm University are developing living hybrid materials using lignin, a biodegradable byproduct of the pulp and paper industry. By combining this biomass with microorganisms, they aim to create materials capable of capturing carbon dioxide and removing pollutants from water. This approach replaces synthetic, fossil-based polymers with a sustainable alternative. The project explores how the structural properties of lignin can support microorganisms that drive chemical processes for environmental remediation and emissions reduction.
