Researchers have developed a method to convert agricultural and industrial waste into high-performance porous carbon materials. By applying the Condorcet algorithm from game theory, the team identified which waste sources and activation methods create the most effective biochar for soil improvement and water retention. The study tested 64 samples from sources like rice straw and sawdust, finding that potassium hydroxide activation produced the best results. This framework moves biochar production away from trial and error toward a science-based selection process for environmental conservation.
